In Trastevere, Monday mornings are measured in sheets and shirts. The washing lines strung between windows tell you more about the neighbourhood than any guidebook.

Lines across the street

Neighbours share pulleys, borrow pegs and call to each other across the gap. It is a small daily ritual, and one of the reasons Trastevere still feels like a village inside the city.

Watching, not intruding

The best way to see it is to slow down: a coffee at a corner bar, a walk with your eyes up. Ask before you photograph, and you’ll often get a smile, and a story.

Colour and quiet, Trastevere
