At dawn the lake is so still that the villages seem to float. For an hour or two, before the first ferry, Lake Como belongs to the people who live here.

The quiet hour

Fishermen check their nets off Varenna, a baker’s van winds along the shore road, and the water turns from grey to silver. It is the best light of the day, and almost nobody sees it.

Where to be

Walk the stepped lanes of Bellagio while the cafés are still stacking chairs, or take a private boat across to the gardens of Villa del Balbianello before the gates open to the crowds.

And then, slowly, breakfast

A cappuccino on the waterfront, a brioche still warm, and a view that hasn’t changed in centuries. By the time the first ferry arrives, you’ll already have had the best part of the day.

Morning on the western shore

Evening light over the mountains

Mist over the lake, seen from above
